One day guided cycling tour of the City of Toledo
We meet at 9.00 a.m. at Bravo Bike’s Madrid office located at calle Juan Alvarez Mendizabal no. 19, a step away from the Plaza de España, and transfer in our minibus to Toledo at one hour’s or 42 miles driving distance southwest of Madrid. There, our tour begins at the hotel Parador Nacional de Conde Orgaz from where we cycle along the large meander of the Tagus river that surrounds the city.
After a visit to the old university precinct, once an armaments factory, we start exploring this magnificent city’s ancient and narrow streets, bearing witness to the centuries-long peaceful coexistence of so many cultures and religions. Toledo is marked by the very special confluence of Jewish, Arab, Christian, and even Roman and Visigothic cultures. We visit the most significant monuments like the Alcazar (fortress), the cathedral, which ranks amongst Spain’s finest Gothic buildings and where Joanna the Mad and Philip the Handsome were proclaimed heirs to the Spanish throne. We look in at some of the well-preserved synagogues “del Transito” and “Maria La Blanca”. An optional visit to the El Greco museum can be included. Time will also be made available for shopping and for viewing a demonstration of the damascene work, the Moorish handcraft of inlaying gold, copper or silver. The city and its province is also renowned for ceramic produce. Amongst the Toledans’ favourite dishes is partridge, while the city is famed for the quality of its marzipan, from which a particularly rich dessert tart is made. Following a typical lunch, we will spend some more time visiting the city’s most representative sites then bicycle gently back up to the Parador hotel. Here we will enjoy a drink on the hotel’s sunny terrace, from which magnificent views of the city’s skyline can be enjoyed. Afterwards, we will transfer you back to your Madrid hotel in our minibus.
