Chinchón & Aranjuez bike tour
From our meeting point at Bravo Bike’s office near Plaza de España, we will be transferred by mini-bus to the town of Chinchón, at one hour’s drive to the south-east of Madrid. Here we begin our cycle ride, visiting first the famous Plaza Mayor (main square), a unique architectural jewel of three storey framed houses with wooden balconies, and recently subject to complete restoration. During the month of August the Plaza Mayor is the venue for the town’s bullfights. From here, we cycle on through the town’s narrow streets, with stops at the Parador Hotel, art & craft stores, and at Chinchón’s castle where the view stretches over the town itself and as far as the city of Madrid with its new high-rise buildings way in the distance. Chinchón is also famed for the production of an aniseed-based liqueur of the same name.
N.B. The town’s restaurants offer excellent local cuisine, where typical choices from the menu might be roast suckling pig or baby lamb (our recommendation), with appetizers such as sliced chorizo (sausage), Manchego cheese or sopa castellana (castillian soup) containing garlic, ham, bread and egg.
Leaving Chinchón, our cycling route takes us along pleasant country lanes to the town of Colmenar de Oreja where we visit the big church if open and the museum of the painter Upiano Checa. Thereafter, we will enjoy a welcome downhill ride into the valley of the river Tajo (Tagus) heading on towards Aranjuez. Our first stop here is for a hearty three-course lunch in a restaurant close to the river. Afterwards we cycle to the nearby Royal Palace, Aranjuez’ central attraction and the erstwhile summer residence for Spain’s royal families. and train station. Our visit is followed by a pleasant walk in the elegant palace grounds. Aranjuez is surrounded by agricultural flatlands, well known for the production of strawberries, asparagus and peppers.
At the end of our tour we transfer you back to Madrid in our minibus, dropping you off at our office.
