Umbria
The green and spiritual heart of Italy.
In the magical landscape and the gently rolling hills of Umbria you will find many convents, monasteries, abbeys and churches. You can feel the authenticity of this region when you wander through the streets of the medieval hamlets and villages left untouched. Umbria is a spectacle of nature and a land of many colours and perfumes, and everywhere streams, rivers and waterfalls accompany the visitors on their search for peace and beauty.

Bike itinerary
1st DAY Orvieto.
Individual arrival in Orvieto. This breathtaking city was built on the summit of a butte of white tuff and therefore it seems like a fortress standing on the impressive cliffs and overlooking the Umbrian countryside. The Gothic façade of the cathedral of Orvieto is just one of the many unique monuments covering millenniums of history.

2nd DAY Orvieto–Castiglione del Lago (30 km by train + 40/50 km by bike).
After a small trip by train to Fabro and its beautiful castle overlooking the Chiana Valley, you start cycling over the rolling hills. You have two choices: either going a bit uphill through Città della Pieve (a medieval village still surrounded by fourteenth- century city walls and birthplace of the famous painter “il Perugino”) or through an easier but longer stretch through Chiusi. The perfectly preserved medieval town of Castiglione del Lago and its imposing castle surrounded by walls awaits you.
3th DAY Castiglione del Lago–Perugia (35 km by bike + 20 km by train).Following the northern shores of the lake, passing through Passignano del Trasimeno, and crossing hills to finally reach Magione and its castle Cavalieri di Malta. From here you have a short transfer by train to reach Perugia. This city was built as an acropolis on the hills and has a splendid old town centre surrounded by Etruscan city walls.

4th DAY Perugia–Assisi (35 km).
Today there is an easy trip. After having crossed the Tiber plain the stage leads you to Santa Maria degli Angeli at the foot of the hill of Assisi, where many places are linked to the everyday life of Saint Francis of Assisi. Afterwards you then reach the town of Assisi, which will astonish you with its art, monuments and the great atmosphere. The 13th century Basilica di San Francesco is the mother church of the Franciscan Order and burial place of St. Francis.
5th DAY Assisi–Spoleto (45/60 km).
This is the most exciting trip of the tour with many possible stops. The first one is Spello, a walled town lying on the ridge of Monte Subasio, with a large number of Roman ruins. You then cycle crossing the Umbrian countryside towards Foligno, famous for its ‘Piazza della Repubblica’ and ‘Piazza del Duomo’. A small detour leads you to Bevagna and afterwards you can cycle on towards Trevi getting then back to the main itinerary. The stage ends in Spoleto, well preserved medieval village, nowadays is a flourishing cultural centre of international fame.

6th DAY Spoleto–Todi (60 km).
From Spoleto you cycle on towards the village of Castel Ritardi and from this point you leave the Umbrian valley to enter beautiful hills covered with oak and olive trees as far as Todi, considered one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Italy, perched on a hill and overlooking the Tiber valley.
7th DAY Todi–Orvieto (50 km).
Today's stage leads you through small villages in the middle of the nature. There are some hilly sections, which are however not too difficult to face. A variation of the stage takes you along a bank of the Lake Corbara. On the last kilometres the white tuff cliff town of Orvieto suddenly emerges from the splendid rolling hills.
