Tour Description
Day 1: meeting in Budapest, bus transfer to Sárospatak, overnight in Sárospatak
Day 2: SÁROSPATAK – VAJDÁCSKA – ALSÓBERECKI - SÁTORALJAÚJHELY – SÁROSPATAK 38 kms (23,6 miles)
Once Sárospatak was the stronghold of Reformation in Hungary, today the town is the cultural centre of the Hegyalja region. Its castle built in the 13th century is a museum now.
After a short sightseeing we leave for Vajdácska. The itinerary runs through a few small villages and into Sátoraljaújhely finally. The origins of the town reach back to the Árpád Age (Hungarian Conquest) and its name comes from the hill that is looming above the settlement. The inner city still maintains some 19th century atmosphere. After a short break we ride back to Sárospatak along road no. 37.
Day 3: SÁROSPATAK – BODROGOLASZI – TOLCSVA – ERDŐBÉNYE – ABAÚJSZÁNTÓ – TÁLLYA – MÁD 48 kms (29,8 miles)
Leaving Sárospatak, parallel to the main road our trail touches smaller villages and arrives at Tolcsva in the end. Tolcsva had already earned a reputation as a wine-making place by the 18th century. Cutting through the Zemplén hills we ride through Erdőbénye—a village that has been settled for a thousand years at least—then Abaújszántó, Tállya and Mád. The largest jewish cemetery of the Hegyalja region and a Roccoco-style synagogue is located here. Tradesmen of the former jewish community played a crucial role in running the wine industry in Mád.
Day 4: MÁD – TÁLLYA - MONOK – SZERENCS – PRÜGY – TOKAJ 49 kms (30,4 miles)
All the settlements in the surrounding region welcome travellers with cultural heritage sites and interesting places. Lajos Kossuth, leading figure of the Reform Age and the 1848-49 War of Independence was born in Monok, while the Rákóczi castle in Szerencs was built in the 16th century. Our itinerary runs through the beautiful natural reserve of Taktaköz and finishes in Tokaj at the end of the day.
Day 5: TOKAJ – RAKAMAZ – TISZAESZLÁR – TISZALÖK – TISZALADÁNY – TOKAJ 41 kms (25,4 miles)
Tokaj bears the title of the ’international town of vini- and viticulture’ and lent its name to the famous Tokaji aszú. The significance of the town is further increased by the fact that Tokaj lies on trading routes, the surrounding areas are rich in fish and wild game and viniculture had already existed here before the Hungarian Conquest. Leaving Tokaj, we ride along the river and cross the Tisza at Tiszalök by ferry. The road runs back to Tokaj in a beautiful natual setting.
Day 6: TOKAJ – BODROGKERESZTÚR – TARCAL – TAKTABÁJ – TISZATARDOS – TISZALADÁNY – TOKAJ 41 kms (25,4 miles)
We ride around Kopasz (Bald) hill and continue towards the north through Bodrogkeresztúr. The town had been inhabited as early as 2100 B.C. Tarcal and Taktabáj follow next and we arrive at Tokaj again through Tiszaladány.
